16th March: Emily & Katie had Daddy to themselves for the weekend, and we drove up early on Saturday for a couple of days in the Lakes. Starting with quite a long (~7 mile) walk up Tarn Crag from Grasmere.
At the time it seemed exciting to reach the snow, but this was nothing compared to the next day.
At the summit of Tarn Crag (1,801').
Enjoying a well-earned hot chocolate in the Phesant Inn, Keswick. A good meal too, but unfortunately no time for pudding, as it was already past bedtime and we still had to drive down Borrowdale to the Youth Hostel at Honister Hause.
17th: Next morning, we got quite a shock when we looked out of the window to find a blanket of snow everywhere.
Slightly worried about having to stay longer than we intended, but fortunately the Slate mine next door cleared the road.
After some deliberation, we decided to go for an adventurous short walk up Fleetwith Pike in the snow.
Unfortunately, one of my favourite views of the Lake District was obscured by a snow flurry just when we reached the top.
But we didn't mind - we'd made it to the top! (2126')
On the way back down, the sun came out briefly.
We were back at the car by 1pm, and not wanting to cut the weekend short, we went to Keswick for another hot chocolate and a look round the Puzzling Place, followed by a scenic drive home via Thirlmere. Looking forward to returning to Windermere at Easter.
